Handcrafted WP is a starter theme built for WordPress developers who are doing more than building blogs. The theme is based on Ian Stewart’s Toolbox Starter theme and Paul Irish & Divya Manian’s HTML5 Boilerplate plus some other awesome features based off our years of experience. This is not a framework, but an almost-naked starter theme that gives you a rock solid starting point for crafting a serious website on the WordPress platform.

Digging Deeper

Since this video was made, some things have changed. Namely, Modernizr is no longer bundled and Remy Sharp’s HTML5shiv has taken its place. Not enough people seemed to use it so the overhead wasn’t worth it. Post formats has also been added in the functions.php for when 3.1 goes gold. The changelog will always be available here.

awesome work. I ran the theme against the Theme-Check plugin (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/theme-check/) and found a few minor modifications that could be made if desirable? Mainly, on line 45, 46, 54 changing the template_directory call to get_template_directory_uri() instead. Looks like an easy fix if you’re into it. Thanks!

I really like this and would like to use it with Nextgen gallery to display a slideshow. When I tried to implement it, the loader image just sits there….never loading the graphics. The nextgen plugin works with another theme but when I activate Handcrafted, no dice. I uncommented the line to add them support for gallery in the functions file. Can you help me figure out the issue?

I haven’t used Nextgen for a while, but shoot me an email and I’ll see if I can help you out. Are you getting any error messages? How are you implementing it? (Shortcodes, actual code in the functions.php file, etc).

This is a bit off topic: I like the static fade-in / fade-out menu at the top of this page – is it a wp plugin or hand coded? If it’s a plugin I’d love to know which it is. Thanks!

I just downloaded the theme (file version 13e3b45) and would like to report one little bug that I’ve found on line 40 of the loop.php

It’s wp’s template tag the_exceprt() that contains arguments, while it appears that the_excerpt() doesn’t except any arguments and I guess you used the base theme from old version of Twenty Ten

Hi Randy, great theme thanks.

I have discovered a bug in functions.php, is this the best place to discuss it? It’s to do with the remove_dashboard_widgets function not using add_action(‘wp_dashboard_setup’,”), meaning it doesn’t work on 3.2.1
