The brain injury may be either acquired (stroke, tumor) or traumatic.   Brain injuries present physical and emotional challenges for the student, their   family and friends. Recovery from brain injury has been described as a long   journey. <\/p>\n<p>Although brain injury may result in physical impairment, the more problematic   consequences involve the individual&#8217;s cognition, emotional functioning, and   behavior. These impact interpersonal relationships, school, and work. The   cognitive consequences of injury are similarly broad. Some of the most   persistent problems include memory impairment and difficulties in attention and   concentration. <\/p>\n<p>The HEATH Resource Center at George Washington University states that &#8220;Higher   education offers significant opportunities for cognitive stimulation and age   appropriate socializing opportunities that enable a person with a brain injury   to re-connect with the world, rediscover abilities, understand new limitations   while developing compensatory strategies, and regain confidence and   self-esteem.&#8221; Richland College, through the <strong>T<\/strong>otal <strong>Re<\/strong>&#8211;<strong>I<\/strong>ntegration Program, has been doing just   that since its inception. <\/p>\n<p>The Richland College Total Re-Integration (TRI) program offers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Convenient location on the bus line <\/li>\n<li> Small class size <\/li>\n<li> Interdisciplinary instruction <\/li>\n<li> Individualized fitness evaluation <\/li>\n<li> Totally accessible campus <\/li>\n<li> Community referrals <\/li>\n<li> Academic support services <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The program is open to adults of all ages who have documented brain injuries acquired through trauma or disease.
