In this 45-minute simulation, college employees and students learn the indicators of psychological distress and how best to approach an at-risk student for referral to the CARE Team. <\/p>\n<p>\nIn addition to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kognitocampus.com\/faculty\">Kognito At Risk<\/a> software software program, the following information may be helpful. The &#8220;D&#8221; Scale is one way to measure and assess mental health related risks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Distress<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A student in distress is characterized by the following traits: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Emotionally troubled (e.g. depressed, agitated, unstable) Individuals impacted by actual\/perceived situational stressors and traumatic events.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You may observe these behaviors: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Changes in academic performance in the classroom<\/li>\n<li>Significant changes in test scores<\/li>\n<li>Changes in pattern of interaction<\/li>\n<li>Changes in physical appearance<\/li>\n<li>Problems concentrating and remembering things or making decisions <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Disturbance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You may observe these behaviors: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Repeating requests for special consideration<\/li>\n<li>New or regularly occurring behavior which interferes with class management or is disruptive to other students or college employees<\/li>\n<li>Unusual or exaggerated emotional responses (venting, screaming, swearing)<\/li>\n<li>Persistent sadness or unexplained crying<\/li>\n<li>High levels of irritability or inappropriate excitement  <\/li>\n<li>Destructive, harmful or threatening behaviors or attitudes toward others<\/li>\n<li>Any substance misuse or abuse<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Dysregulation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You may observe these behaviors: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Statements related to death or dying or feelings of hopelessness <\/li>\n<li>Threats of harming self or others<\/li>\n<li>Highly disturbed behavior<\/li>\n<li>Outbursts of anger <\/li>\n<li>Inability to communicate easily<\/li>\n<li>Irrational conversation or speech that seems disconnected<\/li>\n<li>Loss of contact with reality such as seeing or hearing things that are not there, or beliefs or actions at odds with reality<\/li>\n<li>Suspiciousness or irrational feelings of persecution<\/li>\n<li>Intimidation through verbal or nonverbal threatening behavior<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The CARE Team encourages you to use the Kognito At Risk software.
